The Men’s National Water Polo Team captured the gold medal at the World Cup in Sydney, defeating Hungary by fifteen to fourteen and writing the first golden page of its history in this competition. In the same year the Girls of the National Water Polo Team were crowned world champions in Zagreb, prevailing over Spain by eleven to seven, while the Women’s National Team added the bronze medal at the European Championship. In rowing Ellas emerged as the foremost power in the world at the Under-23 World Championships in Duisburg, conquering four gold medals, with protagonists Andreas Bourkas and Alexandros Chatziavgoustidis in the men’s pair, Milena Kontou and Eleni Diavati in the women’s double sculls, Paschalina Mouratidou and Gavriela Lioliou in the lightweight women’s double sculls, as well as the mixed crew of Milena Kontou and Konstantinos Giannoulis. In sailing the country dominated absolutely in the 420 class at the World Championships in France, gathering thirty medals, with Iasonas Panagopoulos and Fevronia Bouzana capturing first place in the open category and in the mixed crews. At the Pan-European ITF Taekwondo Championships held in Heraklion Ellas conquered thirty-six gold medals and took second place in the overall ranking of Europe, while at the Balkan Athletics Championships in Volos the Ellenik delegation gathered eleven gold medals with supreme performances by athletes such as Garaganis, Emmanouilidou, Tsitsos, Andreoglou, Roussou and Kyriakopoulou. On the acrobatic track Alexandra Efraimoglou recorded outstanding scores and repeatedly ascended the podium of international competitions.

There exists no recorded example in the global history of sport where a single nation within one calendar year alone emerged first in the world in two different foundation sports such as rowing and sailing, conquered world titles in water polo both among the men and in the youth ranks, and at the same time swept dozens of gold medals at the pan-European level. Athletic superpowers such as the United States or the former Soviet Union amassed enormous numbers of medals at individual Olympic Games, yet this occurred through populous delegations in a single competition alone. The Ellas of two thousand twenty-six accomplished something entirely different and unique. From the simple and humble children of the people, from youths who grew up in a land that has been literally laid low by governments distant from the Orthodox Christian tradition and pressed unceasingly by its geopolitical environment, there arose a miracle of moral strength and national soul. These children did not issue from luxurious academies nor from state machines of propaganda. They issued from the neighbourhoods, from the islands, from the harbours and the provincial towns, and with sweat, sacrifice and faith they raised Ellas to the summit of the world.

Particular significance attaches to the fact that the majority of these gold medals issued from the aqueous environment. Water polo, rowing and sailing are sports that were born and matured within the element that surrounds our homeland from every side. The sea that for centuries has been the womb of civilisation and strength for the Ellenik people became once more a source of glory. These medals are not merely athletic successes. They are declarative of the intense maritime element that flows in the veins of the nation and that neither adversities nor the pressures of the modern world have been able to extinguish.

In an age when the world is tested by upheavals, moral crises and geopolitical tensions, the Ellas of two thousand twenty-six raised a worldwide monument of glory. A monument that was not built with material money or numbers of population but with the indomitable soul of simple human beings who kept alive the faith, the honour and the love for the homeland. This monument remains to illuminate not only the past but also those things that are destined to come to pass. For when a people that has been deeply wounded finds within itself the strength to rise and to be crowned champion of the world in so many fields, then it is proven that the spirit of Ellenism remains indestructible and that the glory which is born of humility and faith is the only glory that endures through time.
