“Christian” Zionism

1. What is “Christian” Zionism

The “Christian” Zionism is the movement that exists mainly among Evangelical fundamentalist and Pentecostal circles in the U.S.A., and is based on the perception that the Jews, although they refused to recognize Christ as the Messiah, always remain in full the chosen people of God and continue to hold a special place within the framework of the divine plan until today. This plan also includes the restoration of Israel as a state. According to the claims of the followers of “Christian” Zionism, every people that opposes or resists Israel opposes God.

They attempt to ground these perceptions in Holy Scripture, in such a way that they turn Holy Scripture into an ideological text, through which they identify with specific political choices of a state. For this reason, it is not accidental that widely known Evangelical fundamentalist televangelists in the U.S.A. in the past, such as Gary Bauer, Jerry Falwell, and Pat Robertson etc., followers of Christian Zionism, due to their influence on their audiences, on the one hand often constitute official interlocutors of various Israeli governmental figures, and on the other hand are permanent supporters of the pro-Israel lobby in the U.S.A. in its every political pursuit (See Periodical “The Researcher of Truth”, vol. 26 (2004), p. 3).

A characteristic example of a fundamentalist Evangelical televangelist, exponent and follower of Christian Zionism, is the case of the well-known Pat Robertson. The aforementioned fundamentalist Evangelical had stated that the stroke suffered by the former Prime Minister of Israel Ariel Sharon was “punishment from God for the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip. (…) He divided God’s land and, I would say, woe to any Prime Minister of Israel who follows a similar course!” (See Newspaper VIMA, Issue No. 14661. 12-1-2006, p. 15).

1.2. Does “Christian” Zionism exist in Greece?

Unfortunately, and as it should not have happened, perceptions that express the spirit of “Christian” Zionism have appeared even in our homeland. They are represented by the Cypriot responsible for a small Pentecostal group, which bears the name “Christian Center of Athens” and is also active in Cyprus under the name “Christian Center of Nicosia”. The responsible person of the aforementioned Pentecostal group has written a small book titled “Israel. The Nation, the Country and the People of God, Athens 2005”. In this book he reproduces not only the perceptions of “Christian” Zionism, but, in his opinion, he also attempts to ground them scripturally, even considering the hermeneutical abuse of the scriptural passages that he performs as the only correct interpretation of them. However, the aforementioned Pentecostal does not stop there. In an unacceptable and ahistorical manner, he accuses our Orthodox Church in his aforementioned book of antisemitism (p. 52), while in another book he has written, he characterizes it as the greatest heresy.

In the spring of 1839, the Protestant Church of Scotland sent four delegates, A. Bonar, R. Murray M’Cheyne, Alexander Black, and Alexander Keith, on a mission to record the situation of the Jews in Palestine. They traveled through France, Greece, and Egypt, and from Egypt overland to Gaza. On their return journey, they visited Syria, the Austrian Empire, and German states.

Christian Zionism: The Research They sought Jewish communities for possible proselytism and investigated their readiness to return to Israel as prophesied in the Bible. Alexander Keith narrated the journey in the book “The Land of Israel According to the New Testament” (1844). It was in this book that the slogan epitome of later Zionism was first written: “A land without a people for a people without a land” and the “father” was a Christian.

Although not widely known, long before the arrival of Theodor Herzl and other prominent Jewish nationalists, as historical studies have shown (e.g., those of Shapira, Merkley, or Sharif), there already existed a significant non-Jewish Zionist movement in Europe. But what was it that made a portion of Protestants mainly become the first Zionists in history? It was the teleological perception of history, according to which the biblical prophecy about the return of the Jews to the land of Israel and the rebuilding of the 3rd Temple of Solomon had to be fulfilled before the Second Coming and the final victory of Jesus.

Christian Zionism: The Expectation In a particularly interesting historical course that cannot be covered in a few lines, a course that involves not only Protestants but also Jacobins and other revolutionary or conservative or philosophical movements of the time, the expectation of Jewish return to the Holy Land among Christians has its roots in English Puritan thought of the 16th and 17th centuries, an era that the great Matthew Arnold characterized, as industrialization created hordes of angry proletarians in the streets, as a reaction of the conservatives to the philhellenism of classical antiquity with its nudity and freedom of thought, as well as to the Renaissance with the return to the “Bible” and passivity.

Historical studies have shown that the Zionist Evangelical Protestants of England “transmitted this idea to Jewish circles” around the 1840s, while Jewish nationalism in the early 19th century was largely met with hostility by the Jews of the time, since they considered it was being used exploitatively to fulfill prophecies of their persecutors. A reaction that remains among a portion of Orthodox Jews.

Christian Zionism: The Normal Country It is characteristic that it was the powerful American evangelist W. E. Blackstone who, when he learned during his visit to Palestine in 1889 that Herzl was considering Uganda and Argentina as possible locations for the Jewish homeland, sent Herzl a Bible.

“Noting every passage that referred to Palestine, with instructions that only this should be the location of the Jewish state.” (see Stephen Spector, Evangelicals and Israel: The Story of American Christian Zionism, Oxford University Press 2009).

G. Gorenberg, the American-Jewish historian and author, has long pointed out the fact that “the people who see Israel through the lens of the Apocalypse agenda leave no room for the creation of a normal country”.

Christian Zionism: The Total Answer It is also characteristic that Christian Zionism supports that after being helped to return, they should be encouraged to reject Judaism and adopt Christianity as a means of fulfilling the biblical prophecies.

Today televangelists, the most conservative segment of -complex and regarding both conservation and progress- Protestantism, and the leaders of the New Christian Right in general, largely determine the supportive agenda in the U.S.A. and beyond, recalling the correct observation of Weber that part of the strongest human motivations does not only concern material gain as -rightly in general terms- Marxism insists, but also our conversation with the fear of death and the total/eschatological answer of religious manipulation to it.
