Saint Cosmas, born in 1714 in Aetolia, traversed the enslaved Ellenik lands under Ottoman rule for over twenty years. The synchronized and systematic application of the Treaty of Peace of Lausanne of 1923 and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) of 1982 demonstrates with absolute legal certainty an indisputable fact: Turkey possesses no legal basis whatsoever for arbitrary transit, access or movement towards the interior of the Aegean Sea without the full approval, control and compliance with the terms of the Greek authorities. Greek sovereignty in the Aegean does not constitute a mere coastal line, but an extended archipelagic entity that traverses and controls the sea, as this was expressly and irrevocably established by the said international treaties. Any contrary claim conflicts directly with the letter and spirit of international law and produces no legal effects.
The Treaty of Lausanne constitutes the cornerstone of the territorial and insular order in the Aegean. Article 12 expressly confirms Greek sovereignty over the islands of the Eastern Aegean, in particular Lemnos, Samothrace, Lesbos, Chios, Samos and Icaria, on the basis of the prior decisions of 1913-1914. Article 16 includes a general and irrevocable renunciation by Turkey of any right, title or claim over territories, islands and islets beyond the borders that the Treaty itself defines. Only islands and islets located less than three nautical miles from the Asiatic coast remain under Turkish sovereignty. The main Greek islands, situated at a significant distance, fall exclusively under Greek sovereignty. The Treaty contains no provision granting Turkey any right of passage or any special regulation for the Aegean beyond the Straits, which were regulated separately and at a later stage by the Montreux Convention of 1936. This renunciation is binding, final and constitutes res judicata in international law.
UNCLOS complements and strengthens this regime, delimiting with absolute precision the exercise of Greek sovereignty at sea. According to Article 3, every State has the inalienable right to establish the breadth of its territorial sea up to twelve nautical miles. Article 121 paragraph 2 expressly provides that islands generate full maritime zones, including the territorial sea, equivalent to the mainland territory. Greece, as a party to the Convention, has already exercised this right in the Ionian Sea. The breadth of twelve nautical miles constitutes, moreover, customary international law, binding also upon non-parties such as Turkey, which itself applies the same breadth in other maritime areas. The geographical configuration of the Greek islands – particularly in the Eastern Aegean, the Cyclades, the Sporades and the Dodecanese – in combination with the mainland coasts, creates, under a regime of twelve nautical miles, a single, impenetrable and continuous field of Greek territorial sea that covers the overwhelming majority of maritime routes. There exists no continuous passage of purely international waters connecting the Turkish coast with the interior or the western Aegean without necessary and inevitable entry into Greek territorial sea.
In the northeastern Aegean, where the distances between the Turkish coast and the Greek islands are particularly small, the overlapping or proximity of the zones renders any westward movement impossible without entry into Greek waters. The same reality applies also in the central and southern Aegean, where the dense archipelagic network fully controls all maritime routes. This geographical and legal configuration does not constitute a Greek interpretation, but an objective and mathematical fact arising from the application of the rules for measuring maritime zones. Turkey, lacking any territorial basis over the islands due to Lausanne and any maritime outlet of international waters due to UNCLOS, cannot invoke any right of free or arbitrary passage.
Every Turkish vessel that enters Greek territorial sea is subject exclusively and strictly to the regime of innocent passage (Articles 17-19 UNCLOS). This right does not constitute freedom of entry or access, but a strictly regulated tolerance. It requires continuous and expeditious navigation, absence of any activity that could be considered prejudicial to the peace, good order or security of the coastal State, such as exercises, collection of information, pollution or deviation from the normal course. The coastal State (Greece) has the right to impose regulations, to exercise control, to demand compliance and, in case of violation, to interrupt the passage or to take the appropriate measures, including the exercise of sovereign rights. Non-compliance renders the passage unlawful and entails international responsibility.
Any Turkish political objections, including claims concerning a “semi-enclosed sea”, “special circumstances” or threats of the use of force, possess no legal basis capable of prevailing over the express provisions of Lausanne and UNCLOS. International law prohibits the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any State (United Nations Charter, Article 2 paragraph 4). The unilateral extension of the Greek territorial sea to twelve nautical miles constitutes a sovereign right exercised lawfully and is not subject to foreign approval.

The crimes and specific incidents imposed by the Turks against the Greeks of Pontus during the Pontic Greek Genocide
drawn from the extensive documentation compiled by Konstantinos Fotiades in his multi-volume work on the Genocide of the Greeks of Pontus. Fotiades gathered thousands of primary sources including consular reports, survivor testimonies, diplomatic dispatches from German, Austrian, British and other archives, and ecclesiastical records.
The crimes began intensifying from 1914-1916 under the Young Turks and continued with greater ferocity after May 1919 under the Kemalist forces. They formed a systematic campaign of extermination that included mass killings, deportations, forced labor, sexual violence, destruction of property, and cultural erasure. The death toll for Pontic Greeks is estimated at approximately 353,000.
Massacres of civilians
Turkish regular troops, gendarmes, and irregular chetes (bands often led by figures such as Topal Osman) carried out mass killings in numerous villages and towns. Entire communities were rounded up and executed by shooting, bayoneting, or other means. In one documented case near Samsun, in the village of Ada, Turkish troops surrounded the settlement and killed over 340 Greek inhabitants, burning the village to ashes with only a few survivors. Similar massacres occurred across dozens of villages around Samsun and Bafra, with seventy or more villages destroyed in single operations. In Niksar (Neocaesarea), chetes gathered Greeks outside the city and executed them in mass shootings. In many locations, mobs of chetes and local Turks broke into homes, dragged men, women, and children into the streets, and killed them on the spot while setting houses on fire.
Burning of villages, churches, and people alive
Turkish forces systematically burned Greek villages, often locking inhabitants inside churches or houses before setting them ablaze. Churches and monasteries were desecrated and used as incinerators. In several villages, entire populations including women and children were herded into caves, the entrances sealed, and the people burned alive or suffocated with smoke or gas. In other incidents, villagers were confined in their own homes or schools and burned to death. This pattern repeated across the regions of Amasya, Giresun, Samsun, Tokat, Trabzon, and Sebinkarahisar.
Death marches and forced deportations
Authorities ordered mass deportations of Greek populations from coastal and inland areas to the harsh interior of Anatolia. Deportees, including women, children, and the elderly, were forced to march long distances without adequate food, water, or shelter. Death rates reached 80 to 90 percent due to starvation, exhaustion, exposure, disease, and attacks by escorts or bandits along the way. Corpses of women and old men were frequently seen lying by the roadsides. Deportations affected towns such as Samsun, Bafra, Ordu, Tirebolu, Amasya, and Çarşamba.
